Sun, Stress & a Glass Too Many?

Let’s Talk About Alcohol Awareness

We’re not used to it, but this year, the British summer has actually shown up. Glorious sunshine. Warmer evenings. And yes, the irresistible pull of the beer garden.

It’s been a summer of “why nots?”

Why not one after work? Why not crack one open in the garden? Why not make it a double – we’re on holiday, after all.

But for many of us, especially in high-stress jobs or emotionally demanding roles, alcohol isn't just about socialising. It can slowly shift from something to enjoy into something we rely on. As humans, we reach for comfort, especially when stress, anxiety, burnout, or even boredom creep in. And with summer in full swing, routines can go out the window. The days are longer, the drinks are colder, and before we know it, that “just one” can easily become the new normal.

We’re not here to shame anyone for a drink in the sun. But as part of Alcohol Awareness Week, we are inviting everyone, including ourselves, to pause and ask:

Is this habit still working for me? Or am I using it to cope with something deeper?

The truth is, we all have coping mechanisms. Alcohol. Scrolling. Overworking. Numbing. And when we’re stressed, burnt out, or running on empty, those habits can quietly grow in the background.

Add summer into the mix with longer days, looser routines, social events and it’s easy to fall into a pattern that doesn't serve us in the long run.

This isn’t about giving up your glass of rosé. It’s about getting curious about what’s behind it, especially when life gets loud, and a little too “on.”

Because awareness isn’t about restriction. It’s about freedom.
